Climbing up to the scenic Qingdao Mountain is a wonderful chance to appreciate blue sea and verdant trees, but you should also not miss the Qingdao Mountain Battery Site Museum, a military fortress site museum built by the Qingdao municipal government in 1997. Located at the northeastern foot of Qingdao Mountain, the museum records the vicissitudes of Qingdao from its establishment to the return of its sovereignty by Japan (1897-1922).

In addition to being a cultural facility that integrates tourism and education, the Qingdao Mountain Battery Site Museum was rated as a national first-class museum in the year 2020. It is widely recognized as the only museum that comprehensively displays the impact that World War I (1914-18) had on China.

Resembling a flying peace dove in its overall shape, the Qingdao Mountain Battery Site Museum covers a construction area of nearly 10,000 square meters and holds more than 1,800 collections of a wide spectrum including weapons of various kinds, military uniforms, newspapers, books, commemorative medals, and postcards.

There are also many precious and even unique historical and cultural relics with a potent impact that cannot be seen in any other places, among them a picture of the Paris Peace Conference (1919), a portrait of the last German Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941), a Prussian spire helmet, and a piece of commemorative embroidery of the Third German Marine Corps.

The museum's thematic exhibition "Give me back Qingdao" consists of three parts: Germany’s Occupation of Qingdao (1897), Japan-Germany War (1914) and Suffering Return (1922). More than 300 photos and hundreds of objects are displayed, vividly narrating not only the trials and tribulations that Qingdao went through during wartime, but also the unyielding and patriotic spirit of the Chinese people.
